The Zoology Museum is housed in a building of architectural and historical interest, designed by architect Christiano Stockler das Neves and opened in 1941. It was the first building in São Paulo built specifically as a museum. Christiano Neves was also the author of the project Julio Prestes Station (now sharing space with the Sala São Paulo), at the same time. The objectives of the Museum of Zoology are: Keep and maintain zoological collections; Carry out scientific research; Promoting education at various levels; Develop activities of cultural diffusion; Community service in your area. The Zoology Museum is animal studies, especially on the fauna of the Neotropical Region, covering South America and Central America. The zoological researches are done primarily in the areas of taxonomy, systematics, biogeography and evolution and are based on large collections of animals, now about 8 million specimens preserved in liquid or dry. In addition to the collections, the Museum is also responsible for Boracéia Biological Station, an Atlantic Forest reserve, located in the municipality of Salesópolis, state of São Paulo. It maintains a specialized library, publications, exhibitions and public service education. In the area of ​​cultural diffusion, research fall in museology, communication and education. In education, the Museum operates in graduate school, offers courses for undergraduate, continuing education and training courses and undergraduate research.
