These restaurants offer the traditional Brazilian barbecue - churrasco, which is composed of whole cuts of meat that are skewed and barbecued in a “churrasqueira” made of bricks. The meat is barbecued and then served at the table, in a service called a rodízio.
Passadores (meat waiters) roam the restaurant, each carrying a specific type of meat. They come to your table with a knife and a skewer and each person can then either choose to take a slice of the food or pass. For the inexperienced it can become quite an overwhelming experience as skewer upon skewer is brought to the table.
Many kinds of meat are brought around, typically various cuts of beef, pork, lamb, chicken, duck, seafood, sausage, or any other local types of meats. Be sure to try the barbecued pineapple with cinnamon and sugar!
The “churrascarias” usually provide, complimentary to the meat, an all-you-can-eat buffet. Typically, the buffet serves salads, rice, beans, and some fish stew. Often, these establishments also offer pao-de-queijo (similar to biscuit, but with a cheese infused bread. The bread is made of tapioca flour and cheese), and deep fried banana (typical Brazilian treats). They typically offer Brazilian desserts, such as pudim de leite (milk pudding), passion fruit mousse, quindim (a sweet treat made of egg yolk, sugar, and coconut), and brigadeiro (made of chocolate, condensed milk, eggs, and sugar). It is definitely worth saving room for dessert, if you can!
Restaurants in Brazil are generally designed to handle lunch time guests rather than the typical dinner time diners. This drastically changes how they serve meals, and how they price their food. Many lunch time diners are looking for a very relaxed eating experience, with a hearty and fairly quick meal. Hot buffets offer them this by having many hot dishes ready. Pricing is frequently by weight or an all-you-can-eat model, many places have both options available.
Sandwiches are considered a snack and not a proper meal! Therefore restaurants normally serve up hot and nutritious dishes for lunch instead of the typical North American small style lunches.
Meals are usually served and consumed on premises, but many establishments also offer take-out and food delivery services. Of course the dinning establishments vary widely in appearance and offerings, including a wide variety of foods.
For Brazilians it is very popular to go back home for lunch to have their meal with their family members. This isn’t always practical, especially in the larger cities, so restaurants have taken up the slack and designed a business around catering to these people. In many of the smaller cities it can be difficult to find a conventional sit down and order off the menu style eatery.
