Steak House These dining establishments have the classic Brazilian barbecue, which is made of entire cuts of meat that are skewed and barbecued in a “churrasqueira” built from bricks. Prime rib, tri tip, fillet mignon, shrimp, chicken, pork, lamb, and even pineapple skewed and barbecued to perfection in a brick oven and served up at your table, where the waiters cut the meat and serve them on the consumers’ plates. The unique cuts of meat keep coming to the customers’ table, where they have the possibility to agree to a slice of the cut or say no to it. The “churrascarias” frequently have, complimentary to the meat, an all-you-can-eat buffet. Usually, the buffet offers salads, rice, beans, and some fish stew. Often, these houses also offer pao-de-queijo (similar to cheese puffs, a bread made of tapioca flour and cheese), deep fried banana (regular Brazilian treats), and baked pineapple - a whole pineapple skewed and covered in sugar and cinnamon and barbecued. Hearts of palm, fresh fruits and vegetables are as well part of the arsenal.
In Brazil, there are several “bares”, or “barzinhos”, (pubs, little pubs) where individuals gather for happy hour to have caipirinhas, cocktails, beers and other cold drinks.
Snacks are popular, frequently they are dependent on the local foods, but many are popular everywhere in Brazil. Polenta frita (fried polenta), pao-de-queijo (biscuits baked with cheese inside), salami Italiano, fried chicken wings, cod fish balls (deep fried pastry made with wheat flour, egg, and shredded cod fish), various cheeses, and olive platters.
It is very common for bars, called botequins, to have cafe-com-leite (coffee with milk) served in a shot glass, plus fresh french bread with butter for breakfast. This is a little unusual for most people, who are used to pubs as a night time venue.
People typically get together in bars to watch sports events. Commonly, these are soccer matches, which take place frequently and not only during the World Cup. Brazil has soccer tournaments throughout the year, and most everyone has their favorite team. It isn't strange to see significant numbers of people promoting their team.
Brazilian pubs range from very informal, lower class establishments to very formal, higher end places. Unlike most North American pubs, most of these pubs are wide open to the public with no formal entrance.
The minimum age for drinking in Brazil is 18 years old, and if you look older than 18 it is very likely you won’t be asked to show your ID. Public drinking is allowed in most cities, and public areas.
