Pastel is essentially the same as the Spanish empanadas. They are generally about 4 inches by 6 inches in size. The pastry is prepared with wheat flour filled with ground beef, cheeses, corn, peas, and other vegetables. Most “pastelarias” (this is how they’re called in Brazil) offer 50+ alternatives of fillings. Dessert pastries typically packed have bananas, chocolate, strawberries and various other fruits and sweets. The pastry dough is usually very delicate and crispy. They are then deep fried and served hot. Make sure you leave room for a dessert pastry!

Brazilians adore pastels and it has become a huge sensation everywhere in Brazil. Some pastelarias offer over 50+ different fillings a person can choose from. Dessert pasteis are amazing. The pastries are complete meals. Often places also offer delivery services, so patrons can call, order their pastries, and have them delivered to their houses. It usually takes half an hour for the delivery .

These establishments generally have a fast food feel to them, with plain tables and chairs. Outside seating and a vibrant customers are quite typical as well.

In Brazil, there are various “bares”, or “barzinhos”, (pubs, little pubs) where individuals gather for happy hour to have caipirinhas, cocktails, beers and other cold drinks.

Snacks are widespread, many are dependent on the local foods, but many are common throughout Brazil. Polenta frita (fried polenta), pao-de-queijo (biscuits baked with cheese inside), salami Italiano, fried chicken wings, cod fish balls (deep fried pastry made with wheat flour, egg, and shredded cod fish), various cheeses, and olive platters.

It is common for bars, called botequins, to offer cafe-com-leite (coffee with milk) served in a shot glass, plus fresh french bread with butter for breakfast. This is a little unusual for many people, who are used to pubs as a night time venue.

People commonly get together in bars to watch and enjoy sports events. Normally, these are soccer matches, which occur regularly and not only during the World Cup. Brazil has soccer tournaments throughout the year, and most everyone has their favorite team. It isn't strange to see large numbers of people promoting their team.

Brazilian pubs range from very informal, lower class establishments to very formal, higher end places. Unlike most North American pubs, most of these pubs are wide open to the public with no formal entrance.
The minimum age for drinking in Brazil is 18 years old, and if you look older than 18 it is very likely you won’t be asked to show your ID. Public drinking is allowed in most cities, and public areas.
