Lauro Sodré Palace, home of the Museum of Pará in 1994, is an imposing neoclassical building, built according to plans by the Italian architect Antonio Landi, the eighteenth century. It was erected as the seat of state government and, concomitantly, to house the General Governor  of the Province and his family. Among the many reforms, adaptations and / or additions by now, was crucial to the governor empreendiada Augusto Montenegro, in the early twentieth century. At the height of the boom when the Amazon live the customs and values ​​of the Belle Epoque, the building and Montenegro print 'decorating inside the canons of the time. Part of the furniture is brought from Europe and elsewhere is made in the workshops of the old School of Artisan. Beautiful crystal chandeliers are placed in the halls and Noble is hired J. Casse French painter to decorate them. These pieces and more screens of renowned painters such as Antonio Parreiras Decio Vilares, Benedicto Calixto, now form the core tional significant collection. As is common to historical museums, the MEP in its collection brings together examples of nature, timing and different styles, with objects grouped in different categories. We highlight the archaeological collection built from 2001 and the collection of Visual Arts, the result of acquisitions and donations.

This imposing building is home to a number of attractions, including the ever-popular Museu do Estado do Pará (Pará State Museum), which houses some interesting artefacts relating to the founding of the city. The palace has been used for several different purposes over the years and in the past became the residence for both royal representatives from Portugal and governors for the state of Pará.
