Bakeries play a significant role in Brazilian lives as fresh bread is often used during many meals. Bakeries provide particularly fresh goods, and are preferred over grocery stores. Purchasing fresh bread daily is a fairly popular in Brazil. Often there are even long lines of people waiting to buy bread that is about to come out of the oven! Bakeries also produce sweet and savory variations, including many pastries. Many new bakeries also include cafes providing various kinds of coffee, hot chocolate, tea, and fresh juices to customers who wish to enjoy their freshly baked goods at the bakery.
Rosca is traditionally served in the south, normally in the state of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul and is prepared from manioc flour. The bread only lasts for short period of time before it gets stale, so don’t buy more than you can eat. You’ll find it cooked in large circular wreaths, typically 8 inches to about 15 inches in diameter. It’s best served with Nata, a butter/cheese found in most super markets.
