This type of restaurant offers the typical Brazilian barbecue - churrasco, which is composed of whole cuts of meat which are skewed and barbecued in a “churrasqueira” built of bricks. The meat is cooked and then brought to the table, in a service called a rodízio.
Passadores (meat waiters) roam the restaurant, each carrying a specific cut of meat. They come to your table with a specific meat and each one can then either decide to take a slice of the dish or pass. For the inexperienced it can become quite an mind-boggling experience as skewer upon skewer is presented to the table.
Various kinds of meat are brought around, typically various cuts of beef, pork, lamb, chicken, duck, seafood, sausage, or any other local types of meats. Be sure to try the barbecued pineapple with cinnamon and sugar!
The “churrascarias” typically include, complimentary to the meat, an all-you-can-eat buffet. Usually, the buffet serves salads, rice, beans, and some fish stew. Frequently, these restaurants also offer pao-de-queijo (similar to biscuit, but with a cheese infused bread. The bread is made of tapioca flour and cheese), and deep fried banana (typical Brazilian treats). Most often they offer Brazilian desserts, such as pudim de leite (milk pudding), passion fruit mousse, quindim (a sweet treat made of egg yolk, sugar, and coconut), and brigadeiro (made of chocolate, condensed milk, eggs, and sugar). It is absolutely worth saving room for dessert, if you can!
